Compress Image to 2 MB

Compress a JPG, PNG, or WebP image to 2 MB or less. This page opens with a 2 MB target for portals that reject large phone photos.

Accepted formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp · Maximum size: 20 MB

A PNG is compressed as WebP, since PNG has no quality setting for hitting an arbitrary size; transparency is preserved either way. Photo metadata (EXIF/GPS) is removed; visual orientation is kept.

What this tool does

Compress one image to 2048 KB or less using the existing target-size compressor.

How to use

  1. Select one JPG, PNG, or WebP image.
  2. Keep the 2 MB target selected.
  3. Compress the image, confirm the measured size, and download the result.

How the 2 MB target works

  1. If your image is already under 2 MB, you get the original file back, untouched.
  2. Otherwise the compressor tries the highest quality that fits, at full size, using a binary search over the encoder's quality setting.
  3. Only if no quality setting fits at full size does it shrink the dimensions, in steps of 15%, and search again.
  4. The result is offered only after its real file size has been measured and confirmed to be at or under the target.

For a typical phone photo, step 2 is enough: a 3 to 5 MB photo usually drops below 2 MB with its full resolution kept. At this size the change is rarely visible.

"2 MB" isn't always the same number

This tool treats 2 MB as 2,048 KB = 2,097,152 bytes, the way Windows and most software count. Some websites mean 2,000,000 bytes, about 4.6% less.

If a form rejects a file this page says is under 2 MB, open Compress Image to Target Size and set the target to 1.9 MB. That fits under either definition with a little margin.

Rough sizes before compression

Source Usual size
Phone photo, 12 MP JPEG 2 to 5 MB
Phone photo, 48 MP 5 to 12 MB
Scanned document, JPEG, 300 DPI 1 to 3 MB per page
Screenshot, PNG 0.3 to 3 MB

FAQ

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image is decoded and re-encoded in your browser. It never leaves your device.

Will the photo lose quality?

Slightly, and usually not visibly at 2 MB. The compressor keeps the highest quality that fits and reduces the resolution only when quality alone isn't enough.

How do I compress a photo to less than 2 MB?

Select the photo above and download the result. The 2 MB target is already selected, and the output is always at or below it.

My form needs a smaller size.

Use Compress Image to 1 MB or Compress Image to 500 KB, or set any target on Compress Image to Target Size.

Can I compress several photos at once?

This page handles one image at a time. For a batch, use the Bulk Image Resizer.

Usually just re-encoding

Most phone photos are 2 to 5 MB, so reaching 2 MB usually needs only a lower quality setting while the resolution stays the same. If your image is already under 2 MB, you get the original file back. Check whether the destination counts 2 MB as 2,097,152 bytes or 2,000,000 bytes; if a form still rejects the file, use the target-size tool and set 1.9 MB.
